Kota Kinabalu: A man was charged with causing grievous hurt to his wife using a Beroti wood.
Aaron Jupinus pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus to the charge against him on Thursday.
He is accused of assaulting his wife at 9pm on Dec 17, 2022 at a house in Kg Tampasak Babagon, Penampang.
The offence under Section 324 of the Penal Code was read together with Section 326A of the same Code.
Section 324 carries a jail term of up to 10 years, or with fine, or with whipping, or with any two of such punishments, on conviction while Section 326A states that whoever causes hurt to his spouse or former spouse, child, disabled adult, or other family members and commits an offence under Section 323, 324, 325, 326, 334 or 335 shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of twice as long as the maximum term for which he would be liable to on conviction for that offence.
The court set Feb 22 for further mention and the bail that had been offered previously was extended.
During the proceedings, when asked by the court, Aaron said he and his wife were estranged.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mas Izzaty Lokman appeared for the prosecution while Aaron was not represented.
