Paramount and HYBE America are coming together to make a new K-pop themed movie with K-Pop Demon Hunters actress Ji Young Yoo and singer-actor Eric Nam as the leads. Here’s all you need to know about the upcoming film.
HYBE America, the US subsidiary of the Korean Entertainment agency HYBE that houses huge K-pop groups like BTS, TXT, Seventeen, Le Sserafim, and one of Hollywood’s biggest film studios Paramount, confirmed the news. The currently untitled project is set to hit the big screen on February 12, 2027. Filming will start mid-September this year, and it will take place South Korea in its entirety, making it the first major US studio production filmed in the country.
What is the new HYBE-Paramount K-pop movie about?
The movie will follow the journey of a Korean American girl who participates in a televised audition program with a dream of becoming part of the next-gen K-pop girl group despite her family’s opposition. Ji Young Yoo, who voiced the HUNTR/X’s rapper and maknae (youngest) Zoey in KPop Demon Hunters will take on this role. She will be joined by American K-pop idol Eric Nam, who previously starred in the movie Transplant and is set to star in the upcoming animated film The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender. The details about Eric’s role are still under wraps.
Benson Lee, who is known for his work in movies like Battle of the Year and Seoul Searching, will direct the film while screenwriter Eileen Shim who is part of the House of the Dragon writing team is developing the script. Reportedly, Lee has been working on the project since 2020. Brian Oh, senior vice president of production at Paramount Pictures, will oversee the project. James Shin, president of cinema and television at HYBE America and Arthur Spector, Joshua Davis, and Scooter Braun have all signed on as producers.
Director Lee said, “This film is my love letter to K-pop — a world full of energy, passion, magic, and an incredible community that supports it. I’m deeply grateful to Paramount Pictures for backing this project, to the production team for their unwavering dedication, and to everyone who helped bring this story to life”.
James Shin of HYBE America’s Film and TV Division also released a statement, saying, “We’re thrilled to be partnering with Paramount Pictures on this historic opportunity to bring a K-pop story to global audiences. This film will capture the dedication, artistry, and enduring popularity of K-pop, while also telling a universal story about chasing dreams against all odds”.
