Teresa Kok, the Member of Parliament for Seputeh, has recently clarified her position on Malaysia’s halal certification process amidst ongoing scrutiny. Her statements come after a period of intense public and media focus on her comments related to a proposed regulation by the government.
On September 10, 2024, Kok arrived at Bukit Aman police headquarters to provide her statement following an investigation into her remarks about a new halal certification proposal. The police inquiry, which lasted approximately an hour and a half, was conducted as part of a broader probe into her comments. Kok’s legal representatives, Syahredzan Johan and Ramkarpal Singh, accompanied her during the questioning.
Kok addressed concerns that she had questioned the legitimacy of Malaysia’s halal certification, a system she has supported since her tenure as the Selangor Exco for Trade, Industry, and Investment starting in 2008. The MP emphasized her longstanding commitment to promoting the certification and expressed respect for the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) and the Islamic faith.
“I have been an advocate for Malaysia’s halal certification for many years, recognizing it as one of the highest standards globally,” Kok stated. “My comments were misinterpreted. I have never questioned Jakim’s role or disrespected Islam.”
The controversy began after Kok responded critically to a proposal by Religious Affairs Minister Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar. This proposal would make halal certification mandatory for all businesses, except those dealing exclusively in pork or alcohol. Kok argued that imposing such a mandate could place undue strain on small businesses by increasing administrative costs and operational complexities.
In her response, Kok suggested that halal certification should remain a voluntary choice for businesses, driven by market demand rather than compulsory regulation. She urged for a review of the proposal to ensure it does not adversely affect smaller enterprises.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has indicated that the investigation into Kok’s remarks is expected to be completed within the next two days. As of noon today, police have received around 50 reports nationwide concerning Kok’s comments. The investigation includes inquiries under Sections 298 and 505(b) of the Penal Code, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, following complaints from various individuals and organizations.
Kok expressed hope for a peaceful resolution to the issue. “I am fully cooperating with the authorities and trust that this matter will be resolved amicably,” she said.
