PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he did not expect his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, to die yesterday as she appeared to be in good health the night before.
In a video shared on Dr Mahathir’s social media accounts, he was seen speaking with Pahang ruler Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, who had visited to pay his final respects to Dr Hasmah.
“I didn’t expect her to die today. She was quite well last night,” Dr Mahathir told the former Yang di-Pertuan Agong in a sombre exchange.
Dr Mahathir also expressed his appreciation to the Pahang royal family for making the journey to offer their condolences and pay their final respects to Dr Hasmah.
“Allah loves her more. Tun, you have to take care of yourself,” Al-Sultan Abdullah said.
Dr Hasmah died at about 9.25am yesterday at the National Heart Institute (IJN) at the age of 100. She was accorded a state funeral before being laid to rest at Pusara Negara in Putrajaya.
Her death prompted an outpouring of tributes, with many remembering her for her warmth, grace and contributions to the nation.
Dr Mahathir’s son, Mokhzani, said Dr Hasmah had been in good spirits the night before her death, but her condition deteriorated suddenly the following day.
Another son, Mukhriz, said Dr Mahathir remained by her side until her final breath.
Dr Mahathir and Dr Hasmah had been married for 70 years.
