SHAH ALAM – Photographs shared by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad following the funeral of his wife, the late Tun Dr Hasmah Mohamad Ali, have drawn an outpouring of warmth and condolences from Malaysians online.
Dr Hasmah, who died at the National Heart Institute (IJN) on Monday morning at the age of 100, was laid to rest at Pusara Negara, Presint 20, Putrajaya, after funeral prayers at Masjid As-Syarif, Taman Sungai Besi Indah.
Thousands gathered at the mosque for the prayers, with the congregation filling the prayer hall and spilling into the area outside.
The photographs shared by Dr Mahathir captured moments from a day of farewell for his wife of more than seven decades, prompting many to leave messages of sympathy and prayers for the family.
One Instagram user, @senoritayogini, referred to Dr Hasmah as the “Bonda” of the nation while praying for her and wishing strength for Dr Mahathir and the family.
“Our hearts break for you, Tun M. Your beloved, the 'Bonda' of our nation, will be remembered as the epitome of grace and humility,” the user wrote.
Another user, @syd.firdaus, described Dr Mahathir and Dr Hasmah as an example of family life and expressed sympathy after seeing the former prime minister in tears.
“You and Tun Hasmah have set the standard for the rest of us on how to lead a family life,” the user wrote.
Meanwhile, @tinaesh said Dr Mahathir had been more than a leader to Malaysians, adding: “We all love you Tun M. More than a leader, you have been the perfect husband.”
Other users also sent prayers for Dr Mahathir, with @fizahramlan writing: “May Allah ease your grief and give you solace and comfort. We love you Tun M.”
Another commenter, @jazzminah_1985, wrote simply: “We all Malaysians love you Tun M.”
User naniekarim also prayed for Dr Mahathir to find strength and peace following the loss of his wife.
The messages reflected not only grief over Dr Hasmah’s passing, but also affection for a couple who had spent more than seven decades together, with many remembering her presence alongside Dr Mahathir throughout his public life.
Dr Hasmah, a former doctor, married Dr Mahathir in 1956, and the couple had seven children.
