A Malaysian woman had known her best friend for nearly twenty years. Having met in primary school, they grew up side by side, sharing countless memories. On the surface, theirs was the kind of enduring friendship many would admire.

However, in recent years, something inside her had quietly changed.

The shift in dynamics

She grew up in a well-to-do family. Her parents were generous, and she often had more spending money than her peers. When they went out together, she would usually pay for meals, cinema tickets, and small indulgences.

Her friend, who came from a more modest background, accepted this with gratitude. At the time, she never questioned it; it felt natural, even kind.

Adulthood, however, shifted the balance. Now approaching their thirties, her friend’s life seemed to be flourishing. She held a stable position as a management assistant, ran a growing side business, and enjoyed visible success.

“She owns a house, a car, and even luxury items. Meanwhile, I work in sales, with stagnant progress and moderate performance.”

The seeds of resentment

Each conversation became harder to endure. Her friend spoke casually about travels, purchases, and new opportunities. Though never boastful, these updates stirred discomfort. She began to feel an emotion she could no longer ignore: jealousy.

Unwilling to appear less successful than others, she began exaggerating her own achievements, portraying herself as a top performer. Yet, her friend only responded with a simple, supportive smile. This somehow made her feel even worse.

A troubling turn

Eventually, her jealousy took a dark turn. When her friend began dating someone she considered “ordinary”, she attempted to win him over. This pursuit was not driven by affection, but by a desperate desire to “win”.

“I don’t get it. The guy looks ordinary, and I don’t understand why my friend is into him.”

Unfortunately, the plan to steal him backfired. The man blocked her on social media, leaving her humiliated.

Confronting the truth

Deep down, she finally recognised the truth she had been trying to bury.

“I wasn’t angry at my friend. I was struggling with myself, questioning my own worth, my lack of progress, and the person I felt I was becoming.”

In a Facebook post, the woman admitted she had grown tired of living this way but remained unsure of how to escape the loop of envy and self-doubt.
