Adam* (anonymised) is a young Malaysian retail worker who challenges the belief that traditional office jobs are always the better choice.

He says that after several years on the shop floor, consistent hard work, smart moves, and a willingness to learn have helped him turn what some people dismiss as “just retail” into a surprisingly lucrative career, earning more than many fresh graduates in corporate roles. 

Starting From the Bottom
Adam began straight out of college, taking a retail position at a popular fashion store while trying to figure out his next step. Friends and family urged him to get an office job. “More stable, less tiring, and better pay,” they told him.

But Adam quickly realised that retail wasn’t just about selling products. He noticed customer behaviour, stock management, and the everyday operations that many overlooked. Instead of treating the job as temporary, Adam decided to master it.

Over the first year, he learned how to handle displays, understand inventory trends, and deal with difficult customers. He started to see the bigger picture—how every small detail could affect sales and customer satisfaction. Adam’s attitude set him apart. He asked questions, stayed late to learn extra skills, and volunteered for tasks others avoided.

Growing Responsibilities and Opportunities
Over time, Adam’s responsibilities expanded. He learned how to manage social media promotions, design store layouts, communicate with suppliers, and even handle parts of the store’s finances. His bosses noticed his initiative, and Adam began moving up—first with small promotions, then larger roles with more responsibility.

A few years in, Adam was managing multiple outlets, coordinating teams, and shaping customer engagement strategies. His efforts directly improved sales performance. Along with the new responsibilities came a bigger paycheck and performance bonuses that significantly increased Adam’s monthly income.

Challenging Assumptions About Success
Even with his steady rise, many people assumed Adam was “settling” by avoiding the office path. He disagrees. “An office job might be right for some,” Adam explains, “but retail taught me skills I can’t get in a cubicle: people skills, quick decision-making, problem-solving, and sales strategy.”

Today, Adam earns an estimated RM10,000 a month, more than many of his friends who followed the conventional corporate route right out of university. Adam knows that his success is less about the job title and more about the effort and passion he invested.

Lessons From the Shop Floor
For Adam, the story isn’t just about money. Retail can be physically demanding and emotionally exhausting, but it also offers valuable experience and opportunities for growth—if you’re willing to work for it. Adam believes that any career can be meaningful if you approach it with focus and initiative.
