I tried on Topshop’s new collection with Cara Delevingne – but is it better than Kate Moss’s?

From ballet flats to oversized slouchy leather bags, we’ve seen many fashion trends from the mid-2010s make a comeback. But I haven’t seen something more nostalgic than a Topshop collaboration with Cara Delevingne.

It follows in the iconic footsteps of Kate Moss’s collection with the brand, which had people queuing outside its stores in skinny jeans, desperate to get their hands on the most eagerly anticipated fashion launch. The glory days pre-iPhone and internet shopping.

Where Moss’s collection was famed for its fringed jackets and slip dresses, Delevingne’s is more refined and embodies the supermodel-turned-singer’s off-duty style.

The 16-piece capsule consists of denim sets, base layers, boxy trench coats and asymmetric silhouettes. And the colour palette is decidedly neutral with browns, greens, navy and white – ideal if you’re thinking about your autumn wardrobe at the moment.

It’s hardly a surprise that pieces are already selling out, so here are my thoughts after getting my hands on some of the items and what I’m adding to my basket.

Topshop X Cara denim asymmetric off shoulder mini dress in washed black

This mini dress is another striking piece from the collection with its washed black colourway and asymmetric neck. And the side ruching feels very Noughties. Its made from a heavy denim-like cotton that helps it keep its structured shape.

The thick band can be styled depending on how off-shoulder you want it. As a piece, it’s like nothing I’ve owned before and to make it feel even more 00s, I’d style it with a pair of chunky platform trainers.

Topshop X Cara high rise slim straight jean in washed black

A denim-loving collection would be incomplete without a pair of jeans (this is Topshop after all). The Cara high-rise slim straight jean fits the bill.

The fit is slim and very wearable, but thankfully not ankle-hugging like Topshop’s infamous Joni jeans. It’s worth noting that they did feel a bit tight, so they might not be for you if you prefer a baggier jean.

The black colourway is easy to style and looks high-quality.

This co-ord is proving popular, so you’ll have to move fast. It’s an effortless take on tailoring, with the trousers featuring a light pinstripe print. The mid-rise cut also promises to be easy to wear.

The perfect transitional jacket, this is a cool take on the trench with its washed-beige denim and belted waist. The tie detailing will make it feel pulled-together, but it can also be worn open for a more boxy, laid-back look.

As autumn rolls around, I’m a big fan of high-neck T-shirts, so this basic is one of my favourites. It comes in white and khaki, making it a great addition to your everyday rotation.

Topshop X Cara denim ultra-wide pleated culotte in taupe

From Bermuda to cargo shorts, jorts were a trend that dominated this summer, and these culottes from the collection feel like a fresh take on the style. In a taupe-washed cotton, the shorts pleat out with more movement than what I’ve seen from other jorts. The high-rise and ultra-wide fit make them an effortless statement piece.
