‘I was stranded in the Pacific Ocean for a month. Here’s three things I did to survive’

  • Sailor Kai Sato survived over a month adrift in the Pacific Ocean after his solo journey from California to Hawaii went awry.
  • Two weeks into his trip, his boat's mast snapped, and he was left stranded after running out of fuel and his phone dying.
  • Sato ingeniously collected drinking water by placing plastic bags over buckets of seawater to gather condensation after his supplies ran out on 11 July.
  • He sustained himself on oatmeal, fish, and squid, and temporarily repaired his sails using kayak paddles and PVC pipes to reach a shipping lane.
  • Sato was eventually rescued by a Pasha Hawaii ship last Tuesday, expressing immense relief and gratitude for the crew's help.
