WASHINGTON - A United States (US) Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed a Mexican national during an incident involving federal agents, German Press Agency (dpa) reported, citing the US Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday.
The man, who was allegedly in the US illegally, had refused officers' orders while inside his vehicle, the department said in a post on the social media platform X. He first rammed a vehicle belonging to the agents and then tried to hit an officer with his car, prompting the officer to open fire, according to the department.
The details could not be independently verified.
The driver was taken to hospital but died from his injuries, the department said.
Homeland Security has opened an internal investigation into the shooting, while the FBI's Houston office is investigating the alleged attack on a federal officer.
The incident occurred in the early morning hours, the department said. It did not say why Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was allegedly in the US illegally.
In similar cases in the past, video footage of the operations has raised significant doubts about the authorities' accounts. Several witnesses recorded photos and videos of the incident, NBC News reported.
