IDS poverty mapping study reaches 40 per cent completion

Kota Kinabalu: A poverty mapping study conducted by the Institute for Development Studies (IDS) Sabah has reached roughly 40 per cent completion and is targeted to hit 50 per cent by year-end.

IDS chairperson Datuk Seri Azizah Mohd Dun (pic) said several districts have been identified for closer scrutiny to determine measures to lift them out of poverty.

Speaking to reporters after an IDS media appreciation event here recently, she noted that the study narrows its scope down to the micro-settlement level to locate affected villages and specific demographic groups accurately.

She added that IDS researchers are working closely with district offices statewide to uncover the root causes of hardship, stressing that not every locality within a given district faces impoverishment.

The final findings will be submitted to the Sabah and Federal governments to help authorities formulate targeted assistance programmes and long-term solutions.
