
The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has started the online admission process for 36 PhD programmes for the July 2026 session, Regional Director of IGNOU Regional Centre Karnal, Dr Dharampal, said on Sunday.
Interested candidates can submit their applications online till July 1 through IGNOU’s official website and the university’s PhD admission portal.
“The university is offering PhD programmes in Psychology, Anthropology, Political Science, Public Administration, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Life Sciences, Physics, Statistics, Mathematics, Sanskrit, Hindi, English, Computer Science, Education, Distance Education, Environmental Science, Fine Arts, Theatre Arts, Music, Dance, Social Work, Management, Commerce, Nutrition Science, Child Development, Home Science, Vocational Education, Development Studies, Gender and Development Studies, Translation Studies, French, Arabic, and Journalism and Mass Communication,” Dharam Pal said.
He said that admissions will be conducted as per the University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations, 2022, regarding the minimum standards and procedures for the award of PhD degrees.
Candidates may apply under four categories — UGC-NET JRF, UGC-NET (eligible for Assistant Professor and PhD), UGC-NET (eligible for PhD only), and the university-level entrance examination. An interview/viva-voce will be mandatory for applicants in all categories.
Dharampal said that IGNOU offers both full-time and part-time PhD programmes. Selected scholars will be required to complete their coursework at the university headquarters in New Delhi, with a minimum attendance requirement of 80 per cent.
The application fee has been fixed at Rs 2,000. Detailed information regarding eligibility, subject-wise seats, reservation policy, admission procedure and entrance examination syllabus is available on the university website, he added.
