Igor Arrieta claimed a rain-soaked stage five victory in the Giro d’Italia despite crashing and taking a wrong turn on an eventful day.

The Spaniard, who went down 14km from the line on the 203km route from Praia a Mare to Potenza, edged out Portugal’s Afonso Eulalio, who had also crashed with 6.5km to go in difficult conditions.

UAE Team Emirates XRG rider Arrieta prevailed even after taking a wrong turn on the final descent, edging past Bahrain Victorious’ Eulalio with Guillermo Silva, of XDS Astana, crossing the line in third.

However, Eulalio’s efforts secured him the race leader’s pink jersey and he will head into Thursday’s 142km Paestum to Napoli stage with an advantage of two minutes and 51 seconds over Arrieta.
