India’s higher education sector has received a major boost in the latest QS World University Rankings 2027, with more than half of the country’s ranked universities improving their global positions.
A total of 52 Indian institutions featured in the QS World University Rankings. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, has seen a significant jump from the last year’s 123rd position to the current 118th rank globally. It also emerged as the top-ranked Indian institution in the latest edition.
The achievement is particularly significant as it matches the highest-ever ranking secured by an Indian institution in the QS rankings history.
The rankings also brought good news for Delhi’s other premier institutions. Delhi University (DU) continued its steady rise on the global stage, moving up to a rank of 322 from last year’s 328. Ranked seventh nationally, DU’s progress reflects its growing academic reputation and research performance.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) also registered an improvement, moving up to 555th place globally from 558th last year. The university secured the 15th position among Indian institutions in the rankings.
Jamia Millia Islamia was among the biggest gainers. The university made a notable leap from the 761-770 band to 686th position globally, highlighting its increasing international visibility and academic standing. Jamia has been placed 20th nationally.
The latest rankings signal a broader positive trend for Indian higher education. Universities across the country are increasingly gaining international recognition for their research output, academic excellence, employer reputation and global engagement.
As India seeks to position itself as a global education hub, the performance of institutions such as IIT-Delhi, DU, JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia demonstrates the growing competitiveness of Indian universities in the international arena.
With a record number of institutions improving their rankings and the IIT-Delhi matching India’s best-ever performance, the QS World University Rankings 2027 offer yet another sign of the country’s rising academic influence worldwide.
