Ilia Topuria has taken aim at Islam Makhachev, claiming the lightweight champion is once again looking for ways to avoid a fight with him.

During the UFC 326 broadcast this past Saturday, it was confirmed that Topuria will defend his featherweight title against Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC Freedom 250, at the White House.

The fight was originally expected to be part of a milestone event, but recent reports indicate that the promotion has chosen a different direction.

Reports emerged earlier this week that ‘El Matador’ was in discussions to challenge Makhachev for the welterweight title on what is anticipated to be an historic fight card. However, UFC could not make the blockbuster clash real.

Topuria’s manager, Malki Kawa, shared that the UFC approached them with a choice between facing Makhachev or Gaethje. The Spaniard made it clear he preferred to face the Russian.

But not long after, they were informed that the Dagestani star would not be available for the June 14 date because of a hand injury.

Topuria responded on X, saying: “Once again, Islam comes up with an excuse. This time it’s an injury.”

He continued:“I always knew I would be part of the White House event. Even when the UFC told me at one point that they wouldn’t count on me for the event, I knew it was part of the negotiation.

“When they finally told me I would be on the White House card, they mentioned Islam and I didn’t hesitate for a second to accept the fight. Even though the fight hadn’t been officially confirmed yet, the White House card was going to be announced the next day.

“And when I woke up, I found out that Islam had gotten injured. And then Justin Gaethje appeared.”

Many fans felt only a bout between two fighters of their calibre could live up to such an occasion.

In that context, Topuria suggested that Gaethje will end up paying for what he sees as Makhachev avoiding another big challenge.

“Once again, someone who else will pay for Islam’s escape. Both of their managers are a b—- and also ugly as hell. Justin, see you at the White House. I’m not someone who humiliates people. It will be quick, When you wake up, everything will already be over,” he concluded.
