Kota Kinabalu: A 37-year-old woman was fined RM3,000 in default two months’ jail for buying illegal lottery tickets via handphone.
Maridah Jamal pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie.
Maridah was found buying the lottery tickets without licence using her mobile phone at 5pm on Oct 28 at the five-foot-way behind the Central Market here.
She committed the offence under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months jail or both, on conviction.
Maridah asked for leniency during mitigation.
However, Inspector Suzie S.K urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence.
The court heard that Maridah was detained after a raid by police following information.
