KUDAT: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained two fishing boats for trawling in less than three nautical miles from shore, here, on Wednesday.

MMEA Kudat Maritime Zone Director, Maritime Commander Hasbullah Omar, said one of the boats was detected approximately 1.5 nautical miles southeast of Tanjung Tambuluran, while the other was detected about 0.88 nautical miles northwest of Tanjung Bangau.

AdvertisementHe said both boats were found to have violated the Fisheries Act 1985 by operating trawl nets within three nautical miles from shore.

“Ten individuals, including two local skippers and eight Indonesian crew members, aged between 27 and 56, were on board the boats,” he added.

“However, the two boats and crew were detained and escorted to Kudat Marina Jetty for further investigation,” he said.
