Panchkula district officials on Thursday conducted a surprise inspection in Raipur Rani tehsil to check illegal mining. During the inspection, illegal mining was detected on five acres in Shahjapur village.

Deputy Commissioner Satpal Sharma directed officials to initiate immediate action against those involved. A preliminary inquiry revealed that the land had been excavated to a depth of 20 to 25 feet in violation of rules.

The inquiry established that gravel and other minerals had been illegally extracted from the site. Evidence also indicated that the excavated area was subsequently backfilled to conceal unauthorised mining. Sharma directed that a notice be issued to the landowner, seeking an explanation over it.
