A city resident has approached the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) alleging widespread illegal construction and collusion between officials and builders. The complainant, Arvind Sharma, sought an inquiry into the functioning of the municipal corporation’s building branch.

In a complaint submitted to the PSHRC chairperson, the complainant alleged illegal commercial constructions were in residential areas across all four MC zones. He claimed several buildings were being constructed in violation of building norms in connivance with officials concerned.

The complainant alleged many property owners had covered nearly entire plots, leaving no parking space. Vehicles were parked on roads, causing traffic congestion and increasing the risk of accidents.

The complaint claimed authorities failed to take action despite repeated representations. It alleged that in some cases, buildings sealed by the MC were de-sealed, allowing construction to resume.

Copies of the complaint were marked to the Governor, Chief Vigilance Officer of the Local Bodies Department and senior MC officials.

MC officials could not be contacted for a comment.
