The monsoon has been delayed, but the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted isolated to scattered rain in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh till June 25 due to western disturbances.

Day temperatures would rise by 2-3°C in the coming days, though heatwave conditions are not expected.

“Isolated to scattered rain will take place in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh over the next three to four days till June 25 due to western disturbances. Humid conditions will persist,” said IMD Chandigarh Director Surender Paul.

Lightning and gusty winds (reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph) have also been predicted during this period.

Paul said the monsoon is currently delayed by three to four days and is expected to reach Chandigarh and Punjab by the end of June, before advancing into central and western parts of Haryana.

“The monsoons flow is progressing from east to west in India. Presently, it is stalled over Bihar. However, conditions are becoming favourable for its further advance,” he said.

Paul added El-Nino conditions have set in and it can not only delay the monsoons but also weaken it.

“El Niño happens when warm water builds up along the coast of South America. This rise in ocean temperature changes the movement of air and clouds across the globe, which can disturb regular wind patterns. For India, this often results in a weak or delayed monsoon season,” he said.
