BEAUFORT: A 45-year-old man was killed in a two-vehicle collision along the Pan Borneo Highway at Kampung Lumat on Wednesday.

District Fire and Rescue Station chief Ishak Jabas said the department received an emergency call at 8.55am and dispatched eight firefighters, along with a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle, to the scene.

The victim, who was driving a Proton Saga, was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated using specialised rescue equipment.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by Ministry of Health (MOH) personnel.

The other vehicle involved was a Toyota Hilux Double Cab driven by a 53-year-old man, who escaped uninjured and managed to exit the vehicle on his own.

The victim’s body was handed over to the police for further investigation. The operation involved personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department, the police and the MOH.

According to a source, the deceased was an officer attached to the Kimanis Immigration Detention Depot and was believed to have been travelling home after completing his shift. He was from Kampung Berangkok, Kuala Penyu.
