A late-night outing turned into an unspeakable tragedy along Jalan Sultan Ismail in Kuala Lumpur early this morning after a family of four was struck by an official government vehicle that entered a busy intersection against a red light.
The victims, a 53-year-old father, his 25-year-old daughter, and his 12-year-old daughter, died at the scene following the 1:00 AM crash at the Maju Junction traffic light intersection. The man's 55-year-old wife, who was also hit, survived with severe injuries to her head, hand, and legs. She was rushed to the Red Zone of Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL), where she is currently receiving emergency treatment.
According to Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department (JSPT) chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, the crash involved an empty Isuzu "Black Maria" truck belonging to the Immigration Department, a Proton Saga, an Inokom Matrix, and the four pedestrians.
Police preliminary investigations revealed that the 43-year-old Immigration truck driver was en route from the KL Immigration Office toward Chow Kit to collect detainees following an operation targeting undocumented migrants.
TL;DR: The Maju Junction Fatal Crash Explained • The Fatal Incident: An empty Immigration Department Isuzu truck ran a red light at Maju Junction along Jalan Sultan Ismail at around 1:00 AM today, August 19. • The Devastating Toll: A 53-year-old father and his two daughters (aged 25 and 12) were killed on the spot. The 55-year-old mother survived with critical injuries and is currently in HKL's Red Zone. • Sequence of Collision: The truck entered the junction on a red light with its siren and beacon activated. A Proton Saga proceeding on green could not avoid it, causing the truck to lose control, veer off, and crash directly into the pedestrians waiting nearby. • Ongoing Investigation: Drivers of both the truck and the Saga tested negative for alcohol and drugs. Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Status: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has ordered an immediate and thorough probe with "no compromise" if negligence is proven. Mid-Junction Collision Led To Deadly Chain Reaction
According to ACP Mohd Zamzuri, the Immigration vehicle entered the crossroads while the traffic light in its direction was red, though its beacon lights and emergency siren were activated at the time.
Simultaneously, a Proton Saga driven by a 50-year-old man was moving straight through the intersection after the traffic light turned green for his lane. The driver was reportedly unable to avoid the oncoming heavy truck, resulting in a T-bone collision in the middle of the junction.
The force of the impact caused the Isuzu truck to lose control and veer wildly off course, careening directly toward the four pedestrians who were standing along the footpath. It also struck a stationary Inokom Matrix driven by a 38-year-old man waiting at the lights.
None of the three vehicle drivers sustained injuries during the crash.
Police detained both the 43-year-old Immigration truck driver and the 50-year-old Proton Saga driver to assist with ongoing investigations.
"Breathalyser tests and preliminary urine screenings conducted on both drivers returned negative results for drugs and alcohol," ACP Mohd Zamzuri stated.
Investigators have seized all vehicles involved for technical inspections, secured closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from surrounding premises, and are currently tracing independent witnesses who saw the incident unfold. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
