Red, orange and golden stone waves that seem to ripple through the heart of the desert. At The Wave, in Arizona, the rock formations create an almost otherworldly setting, shaped by millions of years of erosion. It is a rare place, protected by strictly limited access.
On the border between Utah and Arizona, in the wild Vermilion Cliffs region, The Wave fascinates hikers from around the world. This now-legendary rock formation has to be earned, after several kilometres on foot beneath the desert sun.
A crossing that leads to such a singular landscape, it feels imagined rather than real.

A rare hike worth the effort in Arizona
Getting to The Wave is not something you improvise. Located in the Coyote Buttes North area, the site is subject to a permit system with a strictly limited number of passes issued. A way of preserving this fragile environment while avoiding overcrowding.
Once permission has been granted, the walk crosses a stark mineral landscape, with no truly marked trail. Sand, rock slabs, dry heat, vast open stretches… A certain level of care and serious preparation are essential.
Here, silence reigns, broken only by the wind. That difficulty is also part of the place’s character: The Wave does not reveal itself all at once.
A geological masterpiece in motion
Then the landscape appears. Red, yellow, cream and ochre strata trace soft curves, almost liquid in appearance. The rock seems to have been kneaded like a living material before suddenly freezing in place.
These spectacular forms come from ancient dunes that were compacted and later sculpted by water and air over millions of years. The shifting light heightens the sense of movement even further: as the hours pass, the colours grow warmer, deepen and transform.

More than just a photo spot
While The Wave draws photographers from around the world, the experience goes far beyond the image itself. Once there, the scale of the site, the silence and the extraordinary stillness almost alter your perception. You move forward slowly, almost instinctively, taking in the details of the landscape.
In this immense desert, The Wave is above all a reminder of the power of time and nature. A spectacular landscape, certainly, but also a deeply unsettling one.
