Colourful villages, Alpine mountains and magnificent walking trails… Nestled in the heart of Italy’s Lombardy region lies a still little-known lake that locals have long kept quietly to themselves. Peaceful yet lively, it offers an escape from the crowds.

When people think of Italy’s great lakes, Lake Como, Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore usually come to mind. Yet another lake — more discreet and far wilder — is equally deserving of attention: Lake Iseo. Located in the Lombardy Alps, this unspoilt destination charms visitors with its green mountains, colourful villages and tranquil waters perfect for swimming during the warmer months. It is an ideal spot both for keen walkers and for travellers seeking relaxation away from the tourist masses.

A wild lake in the heart of the Lombardy Alps

Mountains on one side, dense forests on the other, and in between, a lake with perfectly still waters disturbed only by the occasional boat. Set between the vineyards of Franciacorta and the peaks of Val Camonica, Lake Iseo may not be the region’s busiest destination, but that is precisely what appeals to locals. Although the area is gradually becoming better known among tourists, the lake and its surroundings have retained a strong sense of authenticity, offering visitors a genuine immersion into Lombardy.

Lake Iseo is home to three islands: Monte Isola (the only one open to the public), Isola di San Paolo and Isola di Loreto. Several charming villages around the lake are also well worth a stop:

  • Iseo: the lake’s main town, known for its historic centre with colourful façades and medieval arcades.
  • Monte Isola: a village perched on a mountain that seems to rise directly from the water. Accessible by ferry, it is home to the medieval Rocca Martinengo castle.
  • Pisogne: located at the northern end of the lake, this village offers postcard-worthy scenery with lush mountains and old arcaded houses.
  • Sarnico: to the south, this town is admired for its Art Nouveau villas and lakeside promenade.

What is there to do around Lake Iseo?

Lake Iseo offers plenty of ways to enjoy your stay, whatever pace you prefer. Those looking to unwind can make the most of the beaches and small sheltered coves dotted around the lake, particularly near Iseo and in the villages of Castro and Marone, as highlighted by Lonely Planet.

The region is also a paradise for walking enthusiasts. Formed during the last Ice Age, the lake is surrounded by spectacular Alpine peaks such as Corna Trentapassi, which offers stunning views across the Lombardy Alps. Some routes pass through meadows and oak forests, while others lead to summits overlooking Monte Isola.

Another unmissable experience is exploring the lake by boat in order to discover its many villages. While cycling and driving are equally enjoyable ways to travel around the area, the ferries provide breathtaking panoramic views over the lake and its shores. Once ashore, all that remains is to wander through the narrow streets, sample the local culinary specialities and embrace the Italian way of life.
