The fascinating origins of Tavolara island
Tavolara is far more than just its spectacular scenery. The island also boasts a remarkable history. According to local tradition, it was once the smallest kingdom in the world.
In the 19th century, the Bertoleoni family settled on the island and claimed sovereignty over it. The story was taken seriously at the time, with King Charles Albert of Sardinia reportedly recognising this tiny kingdom in 1836.
Even today, descendants of the family still live on the island and preserve this unique heritage. Blending Mediterranean legend with a forgotten royal tale, Tavolara retains a mysterious atmosphere that adds greatly to its charm.

Dive into some of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful waters
Around Tavolara, the sea displays shades of blue that seem almost unreal. Thanks to the protected marine reserve, the underwater world here is among the finest in Sardinia.
Bring a mask and snorkel to explore the fish, reefs and crystal-clear waters surrounding the island. Snorkelling and scuba diving are must-do activities here.
Visitors can discover colourful reefs, underwater caves, groupers, moray eels and, occasionally, dolphins swimming offshore.
The water is so exceptionally clear that it feels like swimming in a vast natural pool.
Unwind on stunning wild beaches
For those looking to slow down, Tavolara is home to several magnificent beaches, combining white sand with small pebbles.
Spalmatore di Terra Beach is the best known, with its shallow waters and picture-perfect setting. It is ideal for swimming, sunbathing or simply admiring the beauty of the surroundings.
Further along the coast, smaller coves offer even greater peace and seclusion. It is the perfect place to enjoy the sound of the waves, the Mediterranean sunshine and the rare feeling of having discovered an unspoilt corner of Italy.
Hike to the summit among dramatic limestone cliffs
It is impossible to miss the immense limestone massif that dominates Tavolara. Rising to more than 560 metres above sea level, it offers spectacular views across the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The island’s walking trails lead through breathtaking landscapes of Mediterranean scrubland, sheer cliffs and sweeping sea views.
The ascent does require a good level of effort, however, particularly during the summer heat.
Enjoy lunch by the sea
After a morning spent between the beach and the hiking trails, several small establishments welcome visitors near Spalmatore di Terra.
Local restaurants serve fresh fish, Sardinian specialities and meals on terraces overlooking the water, all in a relaxed and authentic atmosphere.
In the evening, the golden light illuminating Tavolara’s cliffs makes the scenery even more spectacular.
