Nestled in the heart of the Aegean Sea, the island of Sifnos is a hidden gem of the Cyclades with everything to charm visitors. With its sandy beaches, whitewashed alleyways and generous cuisine, this discreet paradise is a must-visit destination this summer.

Imagine an island in Greece where time seems to have stood still, where winding paths gently lead down to a brilliantly blue sea, and where every corner reveals dazzling white façades glowing beneath the Greek sun. That is exactly what Sifnos offers — this small Cycladic island still too often overlooked by travellers. The only way to reach it is by ferry, arriving at the port of Kamares. Once your bags are unpacked, the adventure can truly begin.

Ceramics and gastronomy: The two souls of Sifnos

Before setting off to explore the beaches and hiking trails, it is impossible to ignore the island’s two greatest prides.

First, ceramics. Today, Sifnos is home to around fifteen pottery workshops still in operation — the living legacy of an ancient craft carefully preserved through generations. Stepping into one of these workshops feels like entering into a genuine conversation with passionate artisans, proud to continue a tradition passed down from parent to child.

Then there is the gastronomy. The island is the birthplace of Nikolaos Tselementes, regarded as the father of modern Greek cuisine, who came from the village of Exampela. This culinary heritage can be tasted in every dish, from revithada (a slow-cooked chickpea soup) to perfectly crisp revithokeftedes (chickpea fritters), as well as the delicious kaparosalata (a salad made with dried capers). Good news for food lovers: excellent restaurants can be found all across the island, ready to satisfy even the most demanding palates.

Beaches for every kind of holidaymaker

A perfect summer destination, Sifnos boasts several of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Vathy, on the southern coast, is undoubtedly the most iconic, with its white houses topped by blue roofs reflected in turquoise waters. Plati Gialos, meanwhile, proudly claims the title of the largest beach in the Cyclades, lined with excellent eateries where you can enjoy a Greek salad with your feet in the sand.

If you visit the village of Faros, you will also discover three beaches with very different personalities, including Fassolou Beach — a true little natural treasure home to both a monastery and a charming small taverna.

What to see and do in Sifnos this summer

While lovers of relaxation will be in heaven along the coastline of Sifnos, hiking enthusiasts will also have plenty to enjoy. One trail leads to Mount Profitis Ilias, offering breathtaking panoramic views over the entire island. From the village of Artemonas, another path winds its way to the village of Kástro, passing alongside the Monastery of Poulati overlooking the sea.

Kástro itself — a former 14th-century fortified capital of Venetian origin — is well worth a visit for its labyrinthine streets and small archaeological museum. Nearby, the acropolis of Agios Andreas offers visitors the chance, for the modest price of €2, to immerse themselves in Mycenaean history while enjoying spectacular views from its lookout point.

Finally, the village of Cheronissos, once a haven for potters and now transformed into a fishing village, offers a timeless atmosphere still largely undiscovered by tourists. Be sure to visit Apollonia as well, the current capital tucked away inland, where you can unwind far from the bustle of the coast.

Now is the perfect time to book your tickets to Sifnos and enjoy an unforgettable holiday this summer.
