On Lake Garda lie five islands, one of which is home to one of the most beautiful palaces in the region. Steeped in history and open to the public, it is a delight for lovers of architecture, heritage and natural beauty.

A palace rising from the water, surrounded by palm trees, cypresses and centuries-old olive trees: this very real setting can be found in Italy on Lake Garda. Known as Isola del Garda, this private island is home to a spectacular Venetian Neo-Gothic villa and luxuriant gardens. It is an exceptional estate where the Borghese Cavazza family still lives today and, much to visitors’ delight, opens its doors to the public each year.

A historic island in the heart of Lake Garda

The largest of Lake Garda’s five islands, Isola del Garda boasts a history spanning more than 2,000 years. The Romans used it as a holiday retreat, before it became a refuge for pirates during the Middle Ages. In 1221, Saint Francis of Assisi founded a hermitage there, soon joined by a Franciscan community. For several centuries, the island was in fact known as the 'Island of the Monks.'

Its present appearance dates from the late nineteenth century, when Duke Gaetano De Ferrari acquired the estate and commissioned the construction of a magnificent residence inspired by Venetian architecture. Built between 1894 and 1903, the Neo-Gothic villa became one of Lake Garda’s architectural jewels. Since 1927, it has belonged to the Cavazza family, who still reside there and continue to preserve this remarkable heritage.

A Spectacular Villa Surrounded by Lush Gardens

Thanks to the Cavazza family, visitors have been able to discover this unique place since 2002. Accessible only by boat, Isola del Garda can be visited from late March to October through guided tours organised by the owners.

The tour offers a glimpse into this private residence, beginning with its striking façade. Pointed-arch windows, crenellated towers and intricate decorative details evoke the grand palaces of the Venetian lagoon. Several richly furnished reception rooms are open to visitors, along with a magnificent terrace offering panoramic views over the lake and the surrounding mountains.

As impressive as the villa itself may be, the island’s other great treasure is its gardens, where plants and flowers flourish thanks to Lake Garda’s exceptional microclimate. Surrounding the villa are:

  • The Italian garden, with its sculpted hedges, geometric flowerbeds and spectacular viewpoints overlooking the lake;
  • The English garden, more natural in style, where palm trees, lemon trees, pomegranates, persimmons and other exotic species grow side by side;
  • The rose garden and historic greenhouse, particularly delightful in spring and summer;
  • The natural park, dotted with olive trees and pines and home to a colony of grey herons.

Together, these enchanting spaces make Isola del Garda the perfect escape—a place to savour every moment and marvel at its breathtaking scenery.
