Centuries-old olive groves, verdant mountains and sweeping views over Lake Iseo... This Italian village is as authentic as it is peaceful.

On the eastern shore of Lake Iseo in northern Italy lies the discreet little village of Marone. Surrounded by lush green mountains and vast olive groves, this small Lombard settlement is the perfect place to admire spectacular views across the lake and towards Monte Isola, the largest inhabited lake island in Europe. Still largely untouched by mass tourism, it is an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic slice of Italy away from the crowds.

Marone, the village of olive trees on the shores of Lake Iseo

What captivates visitors most about Marone is its landscape. Nestled at the foot of Monte Caprello, the village is surrounded by thousands of olive trees, a heritage that has earned it the nickname 'Città dell’Olio' – the City of Oil.

In the 19th century, Marone was an important centre for wool production and felt hat manufacturing. Today, however, it is best known for its unexpectedly Mediterranean scenery, set in the heart of the Lombard Alps.

The village’s narrow lanes and colourful houses immerse visitors in a tranquil and highly authentic atmosphere. From the lakeside promenade, lined with cafés, it is possible to enjoy magnificent views of Monte Isola and even catch sight of the mountains rising along the opposite shore.

What to do in Marone, Italy

Marone is the perfect destination for slowing down and reconnecting with nature. There are plenty of ways to explore the village and its surroundings:

  • Stroll or cycle along the former coastal road carved into the rock, now transformed into a superb panoramic route stretching for almost 10 kilometres.
  • Climb the hillside to enjoy breathtaking views over the lake from the Eremo di San Pietro.
  • Visit the elegant San Martino di Tours Church, a Baroque landmark easily recognised by its pink façade.
  • Go kayaking on the calm waters of Lake Iseo.
  • Set off on a hike or mountain bike ride to the Croce di Marone or Monte Guglielmo, both of which offer exceptional views across the region.
  • Take a swim at Spiaggia di Marone, a pebble beach shaded by pine trees and boasting stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

After a day spent in the great outdoors, all that remains is to settle into one of the village’s restaurants. Here, the local cuisine showcases the produce of the lake, particularly freshwater fish and dried sardines. It is a simple yet generous style of cooking that perfectly reflects the authenticity of this little-known corner of Lombardy.
