Nestled within the Peneda-Gerês National Park, this Portuguese village with its striking terraced landscapes is considered one of the country’s seven wonders.

Just a 1.5-hour drive from Porto lies a village with truly spectacular views. Tucked away in the heart of the mountains, it captivates visitors with its lush green terraces, earning it the nickname “the Portuguese little Tibet”. Granite houses, mills and traditional corn granaries set the scene for a peaceful getaway and a truly memorable stay.

A village shaped by both man and nature

The village of Sistelo stretches along the mountainside, following the course of the Vez river. Whether seen from the road or from the heights above, the landscape unfolds into a series of remarkable man-made terraces.

Dating back to the Middle Ages, these terraces are the result of ancestral agricultural know-how passed down through generations. Originally, these natural “steps” were designed to control water flow, making it possible to grow maize and raise local cattle. An ingenious irrigation system that remains just as effective today.

For centuries, Sistelo has preserved this unique layout, along with its architectural heritage. Granite corn granaries, public washhouses and old mills… the landscape has remained untouched and authentic. Its remarkable beauty has even earned Sistelo classification as a national monument—a rare distinction for an entire landscape.

What to do in Sistelo

With such a distinctive setting, Sistelo appeals equally to nature lovers and heritage enthusiasts. Within the village itself, several landmarks bear witness to its history:

  • the parish church,
  • the Roman bridge,
  • the mills,
  • the Chapel of Our Lady,
  • and the iconic granite corn granaries.

Home to around 300 inhabitants, the village is best explored on foot, taking time to soak up the atmosphere of rural Portuguese life.

In the surrounding area, a number of trails invite visitors to explore further. The Ecovia do Vez, a route stretching around 30 kilometres, follows the river and crosses several of the region’s typical landscapes. Scenic viewpoints such as the Estrica and Chã da Armada miradouros offer sweeping views over the terraced valley below.
