While Portugal’s coastline is no longer a secret among travellers, the country’s interior remains largely undiscovered. Nestled within an extraordinary landscape, this lagoon is a true hidden gem.

Just 70 kilometres from Porto, Poço Negro Lagoon, located in the village of Manhouce in the Viseu district, is one of the most overlooked natural treasures in inland Portugal. Hidden among the mountains of the Serra da Arada, this natural pool forms part of the 'Poços de Manhouce', a collection of natural swimming holes gradually shaped by the waters of the River Teixeira, a tributary of the Vouga. Long protected from mass tourism, the site now attracts lovers of wild landscapes seeking a peaceful retreat away from the busy coastal beaches.

One of Poço Negro’s most striking features is the waterfall that plunges directly into the pool. Standing at around 20 metres high, it has helped carve the surrounding granite rock, creating this secluded lagoon amid dense vegetation. The constant sound of cascading water enhances the tranquil atmosphere, while the rocky cliffs and surrounding woodland create an almost dreamlike setting.

A preserved natural oasis

Surrounded by dense forest, Poço Negro Lagoon reveals itself as a rare natural sanctuary. Situated in an almost untouched environment, it is bordered by erosion-sculpted rocks and lush vegetation that reinforce its sense of isolation. The area forms part of the Natura 2000 network covering the Freita and Arada mountain ranges, home to remarkable biodiversity and one of the region’s best-preserved natural environments.

Contrary to what its name might suggest, the waters of Poço Negro ('Black Well') are not black at all. Instead, they display stunning shades ranging from emerald green to turquoise, making them particularly photogenic. This colouring results from a combination of exceptionally pure water, the depth of the pool, and the interplay of light and shadow created by the surrounding cliffs and vegetation. Fed by the crystal-clear waters of the River Teixeira, the lagoon remains cool and transparent even during the hottest days of summer. Its name is believed to refer more to its impressive depth than to the colour of its waters.

A nature-filled getaway

Ideal for hot summer days

When temperatures soar, the cool waters of Poço Negro provide a welcome refuge from the heat. Visitors come to swim, cool off beneath the waterfall, or simply enjoy the scenery in an exceptional natural setting. However, the depth of the pool calls for caution, as the site is neither supervised nor equipped like a conventional riverside bathing area.

Relaxation: swimming and picnicking

With no tourist facilities, cafés or toilets, Poço Negro has retained its unspoilt character. This lack of development is part of its appeal: visitors come to spend a few hours immersed in nature, often bringing a picnic and enjoying the tranquillity of the surroundings. The lagoon is particularly popular with families, photographers and enthusiasts of freshwater swimming.

Walking trails and hiking routes

The lagoon also forms part of the region’s hiking network. A short footpath leads from nearby parking areas to the pool itself, while the surrounding area offers several walking routes through the Lafões mountains. Poço Negro is notably included on the Water and Stone Route and lies along the renowned Magic Mountains (Montanhas Mágicas) trails, which pass through some of the most spectacular natural landscapes in central Portugal.
