In the heart of Porto, Bolhão Market has stood the test of time without losing its identity. Discover this iconic landmark, which remains an essential stop on any trip to Portugal.
What would a visit to Portugal be without a stop at Bolhão Market? Nestled in the city of Porto, this site has become a true institution. Behind its elegant façades lies a vibrant hub where traders, visitors and culinary traditions come together. Far more than just a marketplace, it perfectly reflects the identity of Portugal’s famous northern city.
A historical market at the heart of Portuguese life
Just a short walk from Avenida dos Aliados (the main avenue in Porto’s historic centre), Bolhão Market has occupied a prime position in the city’s urban landscape for more than a century. The project was launched in 1914 with the aim of bringing all food-related businesses together under one roof. It was not until 1917, however, that the market officially opened its doors. It quickly became a key meeting place for local residents.
Since its earliest days, the stalls have been brimming with fresh produce. Fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and colourful bouquets of flowers are available every day. Over the years, generations of traders have succeeded one another, preserving skills and traditions that are deeply rooted in Portuguese culture.

Remarkable architecture that has stood the test of time
Today, Bolhão Market is among Porto’s most iconic buildings. Its neoclassical architecture, designed by Portuguese architect António Correia da Silva, immediately catches the eye with its harmonious lines and rich decorative details.
While the main façade has been listed as a historic monument, the interior features a vast central courtyard that forms the heart of the building. Above, a glass roof allows natural light to flood the market, illuminating the stalls throughout the day. The impressive wrought-iron structure and grand staircase also contribute to the venue’s unique charm.

A successful revival following an extensive restoration
Over the decades, Bolhão Market inevitably showed signs of ageing. To preserve this exceptional heritage site, a major renovation project began in 2018. Over several years, the works modernised the facilities while carefully respecting the market’s original character. The restoration included reinforcing the metal framework, refurbishing the commercial spaces and enhancing the building’s historic architectural features.
When Bolhão Market reopened in 2022, residents and visitors alike rediscovered a venue that had been transformed while remaining true to its history. Brighter, more comfortable and better suited to modern needs, it continues to embody the spirit of Porto perfectly.
