Just east of Granada, Guadix is home to a remarkable troglodyte district where you can spend the night in houses carved directly into the rock. Discover this one-of-a-kind destination in Spain.
Nestled in the heart of Andalusia, this little-known spot offers an experience unlike any other. Located around 60 kilometres from the city of Granada, Guadix is home to nearly 18,000 residents and surprises visitors from the moment they arrive. To the north of town, clay hills stretch across the landscape, dotted with small white chimneys emerging from the ground. This unusual setting marks the Barrio de las Cuevas, a vast troglodyte neighbourhood made up of homes carved directly into the rock.

One of the largest troglodyte districts in Europe
The story of these “cave houses” dates back several centuries. As early as the 16th century, Moorish communities—seeking refuge—took advantage of the soft clay to carve out underground living spaces. Over time, these dwellings evolved into fully functional, long-lasting homes, many of which are still owned by the same families today.
Although they were largely abandoned during the 20th century, these caves are now enjoying a renewed interest. Their low energy consumption and seamless integration into the landscape appeal to both locals and travellers. Around 2,000 caves are still inhabited today, forming a lively and welcoming neighbourhood set against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada.
Sleeping underground in Spain: a truly unique experience
Spending a night in a cave house is one of the most unusual experiences Guadix has to offer. These homes maintain a constant temperature of around 18 to 20°C year-round, making them especially comfortable in a region known for its temperature extremes.

Inside, the contrast is often striking. Behind their understated façades, the interiors have been modernised and fully equipped to meet contemporary standards. Running water, electricity and internet access are now part of everyday life in this spectacular corner of Spain.
