In the Algarve, Praia do Carvalho captivates visitors with its limestone cliffs, a rock-hewn access tunnel, and the atmosphere of an unspoilt cove. Smaller than the large neighbouring beaches, it is especially popular with travellers exploring the coastline between Carvoeiro and Benagil.

Praia do Carvalho is one of those beaches that leaves an immediate impression on visitors. Located in the municipality of Lagoa, in southern Portugal, this small Algarve cove showcases the region’s signature scenery: golden cliffs, pale sand, crystal-clear waters, and striking rock formations sculpted by erosion.

An iconic cove near Carvoeiro and Benagil

Nestled between Carvoeiro and Benagil, Praia do Carvalho enjoys a prime position along one of the most spectacular stretches of the Algarve coastline. The beach is enclosed by ochre-coloured limestone cliffs, which naturally frame the sand and give the site the feel of a secluded rocky retreat.

Praia do Carvalho is no longer entirely secret, and it is now well known among travellers seeking out the Algarve’s most beautiful beaches. Its popularity stems from its stunning setting, its unusual access route, and its proximity to major attractions such as the Benagil Cave and Praia da Marinha. Its relatively small size naturally limits the number of visitors on the sand, although it can become quite crowded during the summer months.

A spectacular entrance through the cliff

One of Praia do Carvalho’s most distinctive features is its access route. To reach the beach, visitors must pass through a tunnel carved into the rock, with a flight of steps leading down to the sand. Arriving in this way creates the impression of entering a hidden cove, sheltered by towering cliffs.

This dramatic entrance is part of the beach’s charm, but it does require a degree of caution. The steps are uneven and can become slippery, particularly when covered with sand, damp from sea spray, or worn smooth by heavy foot traffic. The site is not suitable for people with reduced mobility or for pushchairs. Sturdy footwear is therefore recommended for the descent.

A beach renowned for swimming and scenery

Once on the sand, Praia do Carvalho reveals an exceptionally photogenic landscape. The surrounding cliffs provide some protection from the wind and create a more intimate atmosphere than the Algarve’s larger open beaches. On calm days, the clear water is ideal for swimming and for observing the rock formations close to the shoreline.

However, caution is advised before entering the sea. Available information regarding lifeguard supervision is not always consistent: some sources state that there are no lifeguards, while others mention seasonal supervision during the summer months. As the beach is not monitored continuously, visitors should check conditions carefully before swimming.

An ideal stop along the Lagoa coast

Praia do Carvalho fits perfectly into a day spent exploring the areas around Lagoa, Carvoeiro, and Benagil. The beach lies close to the famous Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, one of Portugal’s most celebrated coastal walking routes. The trail offers breathtaking views of the cliffs, natural arches, and dramatic Atlantic vistas.

To enjoy Praia do Carvalho at its best, it is advisable to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon, particularly during the peak summer season. At these times, the golden cliffs are beautifully illuminated, and the atmosphere is far more tranquil. Praia do Carvalho retains a unique charm: that of a spectacular little cove, accessed through the rock itself, where the Algarve reveals one of its most memorable landscapes.
