Independent candidate Chandan Yadav, who won from Ward No. 14 of Rewari Municipal Council, was assaulted as he reached his locality to thank his voters and supporters after his victory. A group of men reportedly attacked him with sticks and glass tumblers.

Former councillor Dilip Mata, who is nearly 70 years old, was also injured in the attack.

Former Haryana minister and senior Congress leader Capt Ajay Singh Yadav reached the spot along with his son and former Rewari MLA Chiranjeev Rao.

The injured were admitted to the Government Trauma Centre. The Congress leaders spoke to the district Superintendent of Police and demanded immediate and strict action against the attackers.

Capt Yadav stated that victory and defeat are part of democracy, but such a cowardly attack on a winning candidate and a senior citizen is shameful.

He alleged that certain persons associated with the BJP are attempting to crush democratic values, which will not be tolerated. He demanded strict action against the culprits so that such incidents are not repeated in the future.

Rao said the elections are over and the people have delivered their verdict. In such a situation, resorting to violence due to political rivalry is an attack on democracy itself. He urged the administration to immediately identify and arrest the accused and ensure security for the victims’ family.

He asserted that the Congress stands firmly with the victims’ families and will continue its fight until they get justice.
