
Folk singer Inderjeet from Kullu district has been selected for the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar 2024, awarded by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The official announcement was made on June 10, sparking widespread celebration across the state’s cultural and folk music circles.
Inderjeet is among 50 artistes from across India to receive this national honour, specifically in the folk music category. The award carries a prize money of Rs 25,000, along with an Angavastram (ceremonial shawl) and a Tamrapatra (copper plaque).
Despite having no formal musical training, Inderjeet has carved a distinct niche in folk singing through his exceptional talent, relentless dedication and hard work. His songs vividly capture Himachal’s traditions, cultural heritage, local dialects, customs and the vibrant essence of mountain life. Through digital and social media platforms, his music has reached crores of listeners, giving Himachali folk music national and international recognition.
Beyond entertainment, Inderjeet has transformed folk music into a powerful tool for social change and awareness. His lyrics address critical issues such as drug de-addiction, women’s dignity, environmental conservation, social harmony and cultural preservation. His anti-drug anthem “Mata Karade Nasha” inspires youth to stay away from substance abuse, while “Chitta Mukt Himachal” has strengthened anti-drug campaigns across the state.
The Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar is one of India’s most esteemed national cultural honours, recognising young artistes under the age of 40 years, who excel in music, dance, theatre and folk arts.
