Central Delhi was put under a police lockdown as the youth-led “cockroach” movement sought to organise protests in the India capital on 10 October, intensifying a nationwide campaign against a contentious revision of voter lists and fuelling anger against Narendra Modi’s government and the country’s election authorities.
Thousands of protesters were expected at Jantar Mantar, the designated protest site in the city, to demand the resignation of the country’s election chief, prompting authorities to impose sweeping restrictions, including suspension of mobile internet.
The site was cordoned off with metal barricades and thousands of police personnel were deployed in and around the area.
Police said on Friday they had denied permission for the protests because the request was submitted late.
Restrictions on train and metro rail services disrupted travel in and around the capital and made it harder for protesters to reach the venue.
