India’s PM Narendra Modi to join 47th ASEAN summit virtually due to Deepavali celebrations

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed today that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the 47th ASEAN Summit virtually, citing Deepavali festivities taking place in India at the same time.

Anwar revealed that Modi informed him of his decision during a phone call on the evening of Wednesday, 22 October. “I respect his decision and extend my Deepavali greetings to him and the people of India,” Anwar said in a Facebook post on Thursday, 23 October.

The two leaders also discussed ways to elevate Malaysia-India bilateral relations to a more strategic and comprehensive level. Anwar emphasised that India remains a key partner for Malaysia in trade and investment, with close collaboration in technology, education, and regional security.

“Malaysia will remain committed to strengthening Malaysia-India relations and further enhancing ASEAN-India cooperation towards a more peaceful and prosperous region,” he added.

The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 26 to 28 October.

Over 30 heads of state and government are expected to convene to discuss issues such as regional peace, economic resilience, and inclusive growth under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025 theme, “Inclusivity and Sustainability.” - October 23, 2025
