Ollie Pope rescued England from danger and lifted them into a lead with a stunning unbeaten 148 as the visitors showed real fight for the first time in the opening Test match in Hyderabad.
At the start of the day, Joe Root struck twice in two balls as England mopped up the remaining three wickets in quick fashion after India started the day on 421 for seven.
Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley got England off to a typical-Bazball start, scoring runs freely, and they went into the lunch break 89 for one.
However, then India had their best spell of the day, first Duckett was out going for a big drive, then Root was trapped lbw by Bumrah. Jonny Bairstow was then out trying to leave a turning ball, and captain Ben Stokes was bowled by Ashwin, while Pope was resolute at the other end.
Pope formed a significant partnership of more than 100 with wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, who made 34 before a ball just kept low, but it was the number three batter who deserves all the plaudits for an exceptional innings in difficult conditions.
England were dealt a blow shortly before the first Test when Harry Brook returned home for personal reasons, although they will be buoyed with the news that Virat Kohli was also ruled out of the first two Tests for personal reasons.
