JAKARTA - Indonesia welcomed 1.25 million foreign tourists in April, bringing total international arrivals in the first four months of 2026 to 4.68 million, the highest January-April figure since 2020.

According to the latest data released by Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS), foreign tourist arrivals increased by 14.75 per cent compared with March and rose 7.22 per cent from a year earlier.

The cumulative total of 4.68 million visits between January and April represented an 8.24 per cent increase from the corresponding period in 2025.

“The cumulative number of foreign tourist arrivals from January to April 2026 reached 4.68 million visits, an increase of 8.24 per cent compared to the same period in 2025. This is the highest achievement for the January-April period since 2020,” BPS Deputy for Statistical Methodology and Information Pudji Ismartini said.

Malaysia remained Indonesia’s largest source of foreign visitors during April.

Travellers holding Malaysian passports accounted for 16.65 per cent of all international arrivals, equivalent to approximately 208,000 visits.

Australia ranked second with a 12.65 per cent share, followed by China at 10.73 per cent.

“The largest number of foreign tourist visits was made by travellers holding Malaysian passports, accounting for 16.65 per cent of total arrivals. Australia ranked second with 12.65 per cent, followed by China with 10.73 per cent,” Pudji said.

She added that arrivals from all three markets increased on both a monthly and annual basis.

Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali remained the country’s busiest international gateway.

Australian tourists accounted for the largest share of visitors arriving through the airport.

“The increase in foreign tourist arrivals was supported by holiday periods in Australia and the spring holiday season in France,” Pudji said.

Domestic tourism, however, weakened following the Eid al-Fitr festive period.

The number of domestic tourist trips fell to 97.55 million in April.

This represented a decline of 22.79 per cent from March and 24.14 per cent from April last year.

Despite the monthly decline, cumulative domestic travel reached 417.06 million trips during the January-April period.

The figure was 1.48 per cent higher than a year earlier and marked the highest level for the period since 2021.

Indonesia also recorded a drop in outbound travel, with the number of overseas trips made by Indonesian travellers stood at 643,660 in April.

The figure declined 18.85 per cent month-on-month and 30.54 per cent year-on-year.

“On a cumulative basis, outbound trips by Indonesian travellers reached 3.14 million during January-April 2026, a decline of 3.49 per cent compared to the same period last year,” Pudji said.
