The Indianapolis 500 will welcome Artemis II astronaut Jeremy Hansen as a special guest this week, bringing one of NASA’s most important modern space missions into the spotlight during race weekend festivities.
Hansen, who will serve as a mission specialist on the upcoming Artemis II mission around the Moon, is scheduled to take part in several Indianapolis 500 events, including Carb Day, the 500 Festival Parade and race day ceremonies.
The Canadian astronaut’s appearance continues Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s long-standing connection with engineering innovation and aerospace achievement, themes that have often crossed over with motorsport throughout the event’s history.

Jeremy Hansen’s Indy 500 appearance links motorsport with NASA’s Moon mission
According to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway announcement, Hansen’s visit is designed to celebrate the shared spirit of exploration, precision engineering and high performance that connects IndyCar racing with modern spaceflight.
Hansen was selected as part of the Artemis II crew in 2023, becoming the first Canadian astronaut assigned to a mission travelling around the Moon. Artemis II is expected to become NASA’s first crewed lunar mission since Apollo 17 back in 1972.
The mission will send four astronauts around the Moon before returning to Earth, serving as a major milestone in NASA’s wider Artemis programme aimed at eventually returning humans to the lunar surface.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials highlighted the similarities between elite motorsport preparation and space exploration, particularly the demands placed on technology, teamwork and split second decision making.
Hansen’s appearance also adds another crossover storyline to the 2026 Indianapolis 500 build up, with the event continuing to attract figures from outside traditional motorsport circles.
The Indianapolis 500 has regularly celebrated major figures beyond racing
The Indianapolis 500 has a long history of incorporating astronauts, military personnel and major public figures into pre-race festivities as part of the event’s wider cultural identity.
NASA connections have frequently appeared throughout Indy 500 history because of the race’s reputation for speed, innovation and engineering excellence. Several astronauts have attended the event across previous decades, particularly during major moments in American space exploration.
Hansen’s visit arrives during a significant period for NASA as the Artemis programme prepares for humanity’s return towards deep space missions and eventual lunar landings.
For Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the appearance provides another reminder that the Indy 500 has always extended beyond racing itself, combining technology, spectacle and American sporting tradition into one of motorsport’s biggest annual events.
