From 18th February 2025, the older Malaysian population who are eligible started receiving their free Influenza vaccines in various healthcare facilities throughout the country. While some Malaysians have been vaccinated, some are still waiting for their jabs. This article will explore the preventive strategies you can take while waiting to be vaccinated.
Influenza, or the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness that spreads mainly by tiny droplets made when infected people cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can then land in the mouths or noses of the people around them. Although less common, a person may also be infected by touching a surface or object that has been contaminated and then touching their own mouth, nose or possibly their eyes.
1. Hygiene is Your Superpower
- Handwashing Hero: Frequent handwashing with soap and water is crucial. Be sure not to miss the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails. Scrub for at least 20 seconds (Tip: Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice). Then, rinse with running water and dry your hands with a clean towel. Although handwashing is the best method to get rid of germs in most situations, it may not always be feasible. Hence, remember to carry a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol with you, especially when you are out and about.
- Cough Etiquette: Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of used tissues immediately.
- Face-Touching Foe: Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, as these are entry points for germs.
- Regular Cleaning: Frequently touched surfaces, such as countertops, handrails and doorknobs should be cleaned regularly.

2. Boost Your Body's Defences
- Healthy Habits: Maintain a balanced diet, get enough sleep, and exercise regularly to strengthen your immune system.
- Hydration is Key: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
3. Smart Social Strategies
- Social Distancing and Mask Up: When possible, maintain a safe distance from people who are sick. Wearing a mask can also protect you from respiratory droplets. The recommended distance is at least one metre. A study in 2022 found that without face coverings, respiratory droplets can be detected up to 1.25m during speech and up to 1.37m while coughing. However, with the use of 3-layer disposable face coverings, the distance of spread was reduced to 0.15m!
- Stay Home if Sick: If you are feeling unwell, stay home to avoid spreading the virus. If you must go out, remember to wear a mask.
By following these simple yet effective strategies, you can take charge of your health and help protect you and your loved ones from Influenza. For more information on how to register for free Influenza vaccines, please see this article.
