LAHAD DATU: Continuous initiatives and efforts must be carried out to preserve the uniqueness and beauty of a community’s culture and traditions, ensuring these heritage elements are not lost to time.
Etnik Begak Tungku President Suling Isib said preserving cultural heritage such as language, traditional attire, cuisine and customs has become increasingly challenging due to the younger generation’s limited exposure.
To address this, the association has taken the initiative to organise programmes like Edtou Gayo Lami-Lami Begak (Begak Grand Celebration Day) to unite the Dusun Begak community.

“Through this programme, we can reconnect and revitalise the use of our native language while introducing the younger generation to Begak Dusun traditions.
“Events like this ensure our cultural heritage and customs are passed down to future generations, preventing them from fading away,” he said.
Suling said the Edtou Gayo Lami-Lami Begak will be an annual event involving various Begak Ethnic associations.
The programme also aims to elevate the Begak community’s standing alongside other ethnic groups.
“The Begak ethnic community now numbers around 10,000, with many excelling in professional fields.
“With everyone’s cooperation, we hope to further develop our community while safeguarding our cultural legacy,” he said.
Meanwhile, attendee Jurisah Rani, also a Begak, praised the program’s significance.
She said it not only fosters unity but also showcases the beauty and uniqueness of Begak culture.
“Events like this bring together people of different backgrounds, strengthening bonds and helping our community grow,” she added.
