
RANAU: A 58-year-old male Taiwanese became the second to suffer injury while climbing Mount Kinabalu after he slipped and fell, Tuesday.
Ranau Fire and Rescue Department Chief Ridwan Mohd Taib said the incident happened in Laban Rata, Mount Kinabalu, at about 10am.
“When the team arrived at the location situated 600 meters away from the Mosar post, we found that there was a victim who had fallen and suffered swelling in the waist while on the way down the mountain on a flat surface and was unable to continue the descent.
“Rescuers inspected the victim’s injuries, then the Mosar team together with Malim Gunung and Park SAR gave early treatment and brought the victim down using Robinson Stretcher to Timpohon Gate,” he said.

Ridwan reiterated his advice to prospective climbers to assess their health before climbing Mount Kinabalu. He said they should be mentally and physically prepared, and only bring along suitable and necessary items.
He also advised climbers scaling Mount Kinabalu to be extra careful during the current rainy season because the ground surface and rocks are more slippery than during normal weather.
“Always climb in groups, don’t walk alone and make sure to be attentive to what the guides advise.”
