Investigation underway after eight killed in Bangkok train crash

  • A train crashed into a public bus at a railway crossing in Bangkok, Thailand, on Saturday afternoon, resulting in at least eight fatalities and 20 injuries.
  • The cargo train struck an orange bus, dragging it and several nearby vehicles along the tracks before the bus became engulfed in flames, with motorcycles and riders also thrown onto the road.
  • Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat confirmed that all bodies were recovered from the bus, though the total number of passengers on board remains unknown.
  • An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash, including reports that the bus may have stopped on the tracks and that the safety barriers might not have lowered correctly.
  • A witness, Kittipong Raksa, recounted hearing the train signal and then a collision, saying he did not observe the barriers descending before the incident and found an injured person under his car.
