Investment scam victims urged to lodge police reports

KOTA KINABALU: Victims of an alleged investment scam linked to an organisation claiming to be part of a “nation-saving” movement are urged to come forward and lodge police reports to assist authorities in their investigation.

DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Sabah Chief Chan Loong Wei made the call during a public awareness campaign at Damai, Friday, organised by the son of one of the victims, who had returned to Sabah to distribute awareness leaflets warning the public against similar fraudulent schemes.

Chan said police require more information and reports from victims to determine the full scale of the case, identify those involved, understand the group’s modus operandi and trace the flow of funds.

“Only when more victims come forward and lodge police reports will the police be able to obtain a more complete picture of the case, conduct a thorough investigation and prevent more members of the public from becoming victims,” he said.

He urged those who had joined the organisation or believed they had been deceived not to remain silent because of the amount of money lost or concerns over recovering their funds.

Chan said the office of Senator Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe first received a complaint on July 22 from the son of a victim residing in Johor.

He said the offices had since been briefed by the Securities Commission Malaysia and remained in contact with the Royal Malaysia Police’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) and Bank Negara Malaysia to monitor developments and support investigations.

Chan cautioned the public against organisations claiming to be involved in secret government projects, national development programmes or investment schemes offering unusually high returns, particularly when details are said to be confidential or cannot be disclosed.

He advised the public to verify such claims with the relevant government agencies or regulatory authorities before making any financial commitments.
