The Delhi Police Crime Branch has busted a black-marketing racket involving IPL match tickets and complimentary passes. The police arrested three persons and recovered 54 tickets, including 33 complimentary passes marked “Not for Sale”.
The accused have been identified as Mukeem, a resident of Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh; Gufran, alias Sajid, a resident of Jamia Nagar in Delhi; and Mohammad Faisal, a resident of Seelampur in Delhi.
The police laid a trap and arrested the accused near Delhi Gate on Friday.
The police said the accused allegedly posed as authorised representatives of the Delhi and District Cricket Association to sell IPL tickets and complimentary passes at inflated prices.
A case has been registered at the Crime Branch police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
During interrogation, the accused allegedly revealed that complimentary passes were sold for around Rs 20,000 each, while regular tickets were sold at nearly double the printed value. The police said the prices varied depending on the popularity of the match and the profile of the buyer.
Investigators further alleged that the accused operated across multiple cities during the IPL season and travelled by air to locations hosting matches. They allegedly sourced tickets and complimentary passes through various contacts and supplied premium tickets at exorbitant prices to individuals involved in online betting operations inside stadiums, as well as to other criminal elements.
The police said the accused used false claims of being linked to the cricket administration and event management authorities to gain the trust of buyers.
