A suspended member of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (Bersatu) Supreme Leadership Council has urged Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to step aside as party president, arguing that such a move is necessary to protect Bersatu’s future and preserve unity within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.
Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said the appeal followed the circulation of a response letter linked to PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, which addressed an invitation to a pre-meeting involving Bersatu’s leadership to discuss PN’s direction. According to Wan Ahmad Fayhsal, the contents of the exchange raised serious concerns about internal agreements and the coalition’s leadership structure.
He expressed disappointment over what he described as Muhyiddin’s actions, which he said could undermine public confidence in PN and strain Bersatu’s relationship with its coalition partners, particularly PAS. Wan Ahmad Fayhsal suggested that the developments conveyed an impression that earlier understandings had not been fully honoured, especially regarding leadership arrangements within the opposition bloc.
Although Muhyiddin has not faced disciplinary action from Bersatu’s internal mechanisms, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal argued that the issue extended beyond formal party rules. He said moral accountability was required to restore trust among supporters and to demonstrate political maturity at a time when the opposition was under public scrutiny.
The call came amid reports surrounding a leaked letter in which Muhyiddin stated that Bersatu and PAS had agreed to abolish the position of PN chairman as part of a broader restructuring plan. The proposal was said to have emerged from discussions held on January 16, 2026, which reportedly explored changes to the coalition’s leadership framework.
According to the account shared, the proposed restructuring would see Bersatu leading a newly empowered Presidential Council, while PAS would assume control of the coalition’s executive committee. Senior PAS figures, including its president, deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, were said to have been present at the meeting.
Wan Ahmad Fayhsal maintained that the fallout from these developments had created unnecessary tension within PN at a critical juncture. He cautioned that continued disputes over leadership roles and decision-making processes could weaken the opposition’s credibility and distract from its broader political objectives.
Reiterating his position, he appealed for Muhyiddin to make what he described as an honourable decision by relinquishing the presidency in the interests of party stability and coalition cohesion. Wan Ahmad Fayhsal said such a step would help rebuild confidence among grassroots supporters and signal a commitment to unity within Bersatu and PN as a whole.
