Despite growing political friction, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz will retain his ministerial portfolio, following the latter’s exit from UMNO and his intention to join PKR. The decision was revealed during a press engagement at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2025.

Anwar emphasized Tengku Zafrul’s continued relevance in overseeing national investment strategies and trade development, citing his effective track record in handling substantial investment matters involving multiple government agencies. The prime minister made it clear that Tengku Zafrul’s responsibilities at the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry would remain unaffected, and that the country still requires his expertise.

The announcement came amid growing tension within the unity government after UMNO raised concerns over losing influence in key cabinet positions. With Tengku Zafrul’s departure from the party, UMNO had urged for the reallocation of the seven ministerial positions it currently holds to reflect its role in the government.

However, Anwar dismissed speculation of an imminent reshuffle and cautioned against misreading the implications of Tengku Zafrul’s party switch. While confirming that the former UMNO Supreme Council member had applied to join PKR, the prime minister noted that the application has yet to undergo comprehensive review by the party’s leadership and grassroots.

He further advised against drawing hasty conclusions, pointing out that internal party deliberations should not be rushed or politicized. Anwar suggested that excessive analysis of Tengku Zafrul’s political alignment could prove counterproductive to the coalition’s stability.

The matter has also sparked reactions from UMNO’s top leadership. Party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed confidence that Anwar would make decisions that honour UMNO’s significance within the current government setup. This came shortly after Tengku Zafrul publicly announced his resignation from all positions in UMNO, including his seat on the Supreme Council and his leadership of the Kota Raja division.

While the move has fueled debate over party loyalty and cabinet representation, Anwar's stance reflects an emphasis on performance over politics. For now, Tengku Zafrul is set to continue his role in shaping Malaysia’s economic engagement with international partners, even as his political future within PKR awaits formal resolution.
