Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz’s move to resign from UMNO and express his intent to join PKR has ignited political backlash within the ruling coalition, with UMNO leaders viewing the departure as a betrayal.
Zafrul, who currently serves as the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, confirmed that he had resigned from UMNO’s Supreme Council, stepped down as the Kota Raja Division Chief, and withdrawn his party membership. He noted that the decision had not been made lightly and followed discussions with several key figures, including UMNO President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He also informed PKR’s top leadership, including Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, of his intention to join their ranks.
The reaction from UMNO has been sharp. Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Puad Zarkashi described Zafrul’s defection as a blow to the party and accused him of opportunism. He argued that Zafrul lacked genuine party loyalty and warned PKR that taking him in would be akin to betraying a fellow coalition partner.
Meanwhile, Zahid, who had previously cautioned Zafrul against leaving the party prematurely, acknowledged that the resignation letter had finally been received by UMNO’s top brass. Although the resignation had been expected due to Zafrul’s prolonged absence from party meetings, it was nonetheless viewed as a significant loss.
UMNO leaders are now calling for a reassessment of Cabinet appointments, arguing that Zafrul’s ministerial post should revert to UMNO’s quota since he is no longer a party member.
Zafrul’s planned departure has intensified unease within the Unity Government, with some UMNO figures warning that such cross-party movements, if done without consensus, could undermine trust, loyalty, and internal harmony among coalition allies. The episode has once again highlighted the fragile dynamics of Malaysia’s multi-party alliance.
