Internet celebrity IShowSpeed has given the USMNT his backing to go deep in the World Cup this summer – but still believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal will prove to be the winners.

Not much was expected of the USMNT heading into a World Cup they were joint-hosting with Canada and Mexico but Mauricio Pochettino’s side have impressed.

Indeed, the US won Group D by beating Paraguay and Australia in impressive fashion. While they did lose to Turkey in their final group game, the co-hosts are set for what looks like a relatively favorable round of 32 clash with Bosnia and Herzegovina in San Francisco on Thursday.

Watching on, IShowSpeed has been impressed.

Asked for his thoughts on the USMNT during the World Cup on the Pat McAfee show, the 21-year-old said: “USA have actually got a good chance. I watch football, I’ve got a lot of experience watching football and USA look good out there. That’s coming from the bottom of my heart, they look like one of the best teams out there.

“I think Ronaldo’s going to win it but I think USA will get far.”

Speed, of course, has made little secret of his admiration for Portugal great Ronaldo over the years.

Ronaldo faced huge criticism at the start of Portugal’s campaign following a poor performance against DR Congo, but the 41-year-old responded against Uzbekistan by scoring a brace.

Portugal clearly have a team packed full of talent and Ronaldo’s record at international level is beyond question.

Still, those goals against Uzbekistan aside, it remains to be seen if the Al Nassr forward can genuinely impact high-pressure games in the knockout stages at this stage of his career.

His great rival Lionel Messi is starring at this year’s tournament, however, and that is despite winning the World Cup less than four years ago.

It will be fascinating to see if Ronaldo is able to continue to respond, with those goals against Uzbekistan certainly a reminder of his enduring quality.
